American by birth, Apathetic by choice.

I hate politics. Partly because I don't understand enough about the operating system of our Government, and partly because the things I do understand frustrate me beyond belief.
Some may say I am the reason why the system is faulty. I don't educate myself, therefore I don't vote. Since I don't vote, I don't help change the world. Since I don't do my part to change the world, I don't have room to complain when I don't like the way things are. But just because I am not part of the solution, does not mean I am part of the problem either.
The way I see it, hundreds (if not thousands) of people vote blindly every time there is an election. I mean sure, candidates are on the news all the time, and the internet provides an endless variety of information about the people vying to run our country. But how many Americans honestly research the candidates for themselves and make an educated, un-biased decision on who to vote for when the time comes?
Now I admit, I am a member of the uneducated masses. But instead of voting blindly, I choose to not vote at all. So as far as I am concerned, I am doing our country a favor by not voting. Because honestly, would you rather have me vote in an uneducated manner, or not vote at all?
As for why I do not educate myself, it's simple really. I don't actually believe that my vote counts. If you ask me, the Electoral College is an outdated system. In a world where technology rules, and everyone has the ability to research and learn about candidates, what need is there for a group of representatives from each state to serve as a buffer for the American populous?
Now let's say that the presidential election was based on a popular vote. Would I vote then? Probably not. Call me a pessimist, call me a cynic, call me whatever you want...but as far as I am concerned, no matter what I do or say, or how I vote when the time comes, I am never going to actually make a difference in the way our country works and the destructive path that it is quickly headed down.
I'm not even completely convinced that the person who is elected is going to be able to make any drastic changes. Americans are self-centered enough to think that we can control and manipulate not only our own environment, but everyone else's as well.
I, however, believe no matter how hard we try, the world is going to work itself out how it on it's own- for better or worse.
